Is Foam Roofing Eco-Friendly?

Armstrong’s Commitment to Eco-Friendly Material

In many of our previous articles, we have stated that spray polyurethane foam (SPF) roofing systems, commonly known as foam roofing, are among the most sustainable and cost-efficient systems you can install in your San Francisco and Bay Area low-slope or flat roofs. In fact, foam roofing happens to be one of the most eco-friendly and safe building materials. At Armstrong Foam Roofing, we are proud to have been able to provide Bay Area residents with the best possible services for more than half a century. We also feel that an important part of our duty is to protect the health of our customers by providing them with safe products. As a result, we were one of the first painting companies to abandon lead-based paint and create our own low volatile organic compounds (VOC) paints and, recently, even natural paints that are VOC-free.

Addressing the Concerns of Our Customers

When our customers come to us with concerns about health issues, we take them seriously and respond immediately. We always like to educate our customers about the material and processes we use to perform a job. For example, when are asked about SPF roofing and how safe it may be for the health of people and our planet, we provide them with the latest information available.

Foam Roofing Systems and Our Health

SPF is composed of two chemicals that are mixed at the job site as it’s sprayed from a high-pressure gun. The individuals installing the foam are always protected by wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent inhalation and dermal exposure. However, once the ingredients are mixed in the right amount, they react quickly and expand to form a foam material which when it cures becomes inert and should not off-gas any harmful chemicals. It’s important to note though, that the installation of this material must be performed correctly by experienced professionals, such as Armstrong Foam Roofing, who will ensure that the chemicals are applied in the right quantities under the right conditions. If the material is not applied correctly, you may not have the results you expected.

Foam Roofing: Eco-Friendly Material

What’s more, another important consideration regarding installing an SPF roofing system is that it is considered to be one of the safest materials currently available. It is also classified as renewable and sustainable since it can protect your home for a lifetime with minimal maintenance. The materials used to create your seamless SPF roof are classified as having zero ozone-depleting potential (ODP), ultra-low global warming potential (GWP), producing low emission of VOCs, and being free from chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). In addition, since in most cases, in order to install SPF, there is minimal stripping of the original roof, and the SPF roof is installed on top, we basically eliminate the need for expensive roof tear-offs and waste which ends up in our already burdened landfills.
