A Foam Roof Needs Minimal Maintenance

A Foam Roof Needs Minimal Maintenance

With winter coming to an end, it’s time to prepare for warmer weather here in the San Francisco Bay Area and perform our bi-annual foam roof maintenance to ensure it is in top condition. Insulation and moisture resistance are what sets Spray Polyurethane Foam or SPF Roofing apart from conventional built-up roofing systems (BUR). However, if we want to ensure that our foam roof is providing us with these vital benefits, we should keep in mind a few simple things to ensure it is maintained properly.

High-Quality Roofing Foam

All of Armstrong’s foam roofing systems are installed using the highest quality foam material. The foam density used by Armstrong Roofing is rated at 3LB which means that our roofs have the highest quality roofing foams available today. The 3LB foam used offers high insulation values, strength, and exceptional longevity.

There are only a few things you need to be on the lookout for which may result in minor damages to your foam roof. It’s true that Armstrong’s foam roofing systems can last a lifetime by only having to recoat them approximately every 20 years. However, as part of your foam roofing maintenance, it’s a good idea to inspect your residential or commercial roof at least twice a year, preferably in the spring and fall.

Checking Drains, Outlets, and Gutters

An important part of your foam roofing maintenance is checking and cleaning drains, outlets, and gutters.  It is recommended that you check and clean your drains, outlets, and gutters a minimum of twice a year to ensure debris has not backed up and allowed water to flow in the wrong direction. While foam roofs are able to hold some standing water birdbaths without any worries, it is always a good idea to make sure the water is flowing off the roof as it should be.

Tree Branches

Foam roofs are extremely resilient however one of the few things that can damage your foam roof is fallen tree branches. Because of foam roofing’s exceptional water protective qualities, a branch would need to completely puncture, through to the substrate for water to infiltrate the living space – which is something quite rare.

Skylights

Of course, while separate from the foam roof itself, skylights can be a point of vulnerability and potential water incursion. Making sure the glass, acrylic, and frame of the skylight have no damage is always a good idea.
